Midtown

Midtown is the largest commercial district in the world, centrally located in Manhattan, bounded by 34th Street to the South, 59th to the North, the East River to the East, and the Hudson River to the West.  Midtown is often referred to as “Midtown East” and “Midtown West,” and the dividing street is Fifth Avenue.  “Midtown Manhattan” nomenclature is further clouded due to the term referring to either a district or a group of neighborhoods and districts in Manhattan.   Midtown Neighborhoods include Beekman Place, Columbus Circle, Hells Kitchen (Clinton), Herald Square, Murray Hill, Sutton Place, Times Square, Tudor City, and Turtle Bay.  Midtown is home to two busiest transit hubs, Pennsylvania Station and Grand Central. It is recognized for its luxury shopping along Lexington,  Madison, and Fifth Avenue corridors and prominent landmarks: Bryant Park, Carnegie Hall, Chrysler Building, Empire State Building, James Farley Post Office, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan Center, Museum of Modern Art, New York Public Library, Plaza Hotel, Rockefeller Center, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Time Warner Center and others.  Midtown Manhattan domiciles Billionaires’ Row, a group of ultra-luxury residential skyscrapers constructed or in development, generally congregated along the southern end of Central Park. Within this group are supertall buildings that are taller than 1,000 feet (300m), and are amonst the tallest buildings in the world.  Many of these buildings are built or proposed on West 57th Street, so the term “Billionaires’ row” is also used to refer to the street.  One Vanderbilt, a new office building rising on 42nd Street and Vanderbilt in the eye of Grand Central Station, expected to be completed in 2020, will be the city’s fourth-tallest building after the completion of Central Park Tower and 111 West 57th Street, standing 1,301 feet *397m) high. Its spire will be 1,401 feet (425 m).
